Archives: Obituary Index

The Archives maintains an index of obituaries that have appeared in the Methodist Conference newspaper, the Southern Christian Advocate, since its inception in 1837, and in its successor newspaper, the South Carolina United Methodist Advocate. The Advocate covered South Carolina and Georgia until about 1887, and the southern part of North Carolina until about 1870.

The Advocate is not available digitally - we have to search for and scan each obituary individually, generally from microfilm.

We charge a fee of $5 per obituary copy. We'll let you know once we've found your request and you can either mail a check or we can invoice you through PayPal.

Entries from the late 1950s and 1960s for lay persons are often only one-line death notices.

Click in any of the search boxes and type your search. Try searching by last name first. If you get more results than you want, enter more terms to narrow your search.
