Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, “It’s Been a Long Time”: A History of Hip-Hop Before Hip-Hop

To mark the 50th anniversary of hip hop, Dr. Mark Anthony Neal will present “'It’s Been a Long Time': A History of Hip-Hop Before Hip-Hop." Dr. Neal is the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of African & African American Studies and Chair of the Department of African & African American Studies at Duke University. PLEASE NOTE THE NEW EVENT LOCATION. The talk will be held in Leonard Auditorium.

Study Abroad Drop-In Office Hours

Our institutional representatives from our study abroad partners IES Abroad (Kirsten McKinney) and CIEE (Kayla Shepherd) will hold drop-in office hours in the Office of International Programs (Michael S. Brown Village Center) from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28. Students interested in learning more about their program offerings or students with active applications are welcome to stop by and chat with Kirsten or Kayla.

JAN 441/443 IES Abroad Pre-Departure Orientation

Students participating in the JAN 441 A: IES Abroad - Galapagos Islands: Marine Ecosystems or the JAN 443 A: IES Abroad - Santiago: Health Studies program for interim 2024 are encouraged to attend this session led by our study abroad partner, IES Abroad, Kirsten McKinney. Kirsten will provide a general pre-departure orientation and answer student questions.

Georgia Innocence Project: Working to Right Wrongs in the Criminal Justice System

Hosted by the South Carolina Initiative (formerly the Law, Justice & Innocence Initiative), Georgia Innocence Project attorney Isabel Corngold will join us virtually to discuss how innocence claims are screened/investigated/litigated, recently freed individuals, and challenges associated with how to prevent and correct wrongful conviction. Lunch will be catered. Join us!

Documentary Screening & Discussion with SC Alternatives to the Death Penalty Panel

The South Carolina Innocence Initiative will host a screening of "The Worst Crime", a documentary highlighting the intersection of crime, punishment, and mental competency, followed by a panel discussion including: Rev. Hillary Taylor, Executive Director of South Carolina Alternatives for the Death Penalty; death row survivor Jimmy MacPhee; and Chelsea McNeil, 8th Judicial Circuit Defender who tries felony cases. Join us for dinner and this thought provoking event.
